Education: Blue Sapphire is composed of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) with trace amounts of iron and titanium. It occurs in variety of shades of blue. Sapphire mines are located in Thailand, Burma, Sri Lanka, Australia and Madagascar. Like ruby, sapphire is characterized by the optical effects of asterism and chatoyancy (cat's eye effect).
