The cross is decorated with inscriptions in Church Slavonic praising the Christ and Christianity: The acronym IHЦI (INRI) represents the inscription "Іисус Назарянинъ, Царь Іудейскій" (Latin: "Iēsus Nazarēnus, Rēx Iūdaeōrum", English: "Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews") placed atop the cross as ordered by Pontius Pilate, IC XC ('Іисусъ Христосъ' - Jesus Christ), NИКА signifies Christ's triumph over death and purgatory), and "Спаси и Сохрани" (Russian for "Protect and save me, oh my God") on the reverse.
